First Nations, Nuu-chah-nulth, born 1909

The whaling cultures of the Northwest Coast, Makah, Quinault, Quileute, and Nuu-chah-nulth, decorate their knob- topped hats with whaling scenes that depict whales, canoes, whalers, and harpoons. The artist Jessie Webster restored the making of this type
of hat in the mid-20th century.
