Jue

12th - 11th century B.C.

This tripod is an important vessel type used for warming and serving wine. Ancient vessels like this one became highly collectable from the Ming dynasty (1368–1644)—owners sometimes used them as actual wine cups during social gatherings: See the bamboo brush pot carved by Gu Jue exhibited in this gallery. It shows four gentlemen having evening drinks surrounded by a collection of books, fine ceramics, and antiques, including a bronze cup like this one.
