Camfferman, a member of the "Group of Twelve" in 1937, an unofficial art community that included her husband Peter Camfferman and Kenneth Callahan, described her approach: "My work is a form of expressionism. A continual search for means to express my reactions to the thing seen (not so much the subject itself, as the feeling it arises in me), which I try to express by means of whatever knowledge I can of color, form, and rhythmic composition. In portraiture as in landscape I try to get the essence of the character using planes in their plastic force.
