Caudle Cup

Caudle Cup

ca. 1690-1700

John Coney

American, 1656 - 1722

Coney was an apprentice to Jeremiah Dummer, the smith of the highly important chinoiserie tankard that is being gifted to SAM. He married Dummer’s wife’s cousin, and after her death he married Dummer’s sister-in-law. He became one of Boston’s leading silversmiths. This caudle cup offers early silversmithing techniques: scroll strap handles, a cable collar, and chased gadrooning at the base.
