Butterfly, Queens

Jitka Hanzlova

Czech, (works in Germany), born 1958

In contrast to the anthropological rigor of Sander's project, this photograph is from the "Female" series made by Hanzlova from 1997-2000. In over fifty works, the artist posed young women she encountered in Europe and the U.S. in similar compositions to reveal an intangible variety in each subject's manner of dress and the blurring of geographical identities in an increasingly globalized world.
