Salt

ca. 1740

Samuel Edwards

Boston, 1705 - 1762

Salts were first produced in the colonies as shallow bowls for individual use at the table. Gilded interiors and glass liners protected silver from salt’s corrosive properties. Always a precious commodity, it was not until the nineteenth century that salt extraction became a domestic industry in America.
