Mickalene Thomas

American, born 1971

"My interest in portraiture," Thomas explains, "stems from an ongoing investigation of black female identity and, in particular, the radical potential such ornamental beauty presents in the context of western art history." Here the artist shows us a young Black woman who assertively claims her surroundings.
