NaXine (Chilkat robe)

NaXine (Chilkat robe)

ca. 1860

The central design area has been creatively interpreted as a whale facing downward, its flared tail bordering the top of the robe, perhaps suggestive of the last part of the whale visible in diving action. Facial features incorporated into the body design may reference gunaakadeet and the story of the man who wore the skin of a whale and achieved supernatural powers.
