Cat III
1994
The monotype process was offered as an option for Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence to utilize in 1994. After fifty years as a painter who primarily used oils, the ease of applying ink to a glass plate opened up new possibilities. As she observed, "It's a freeing type of print. It's the accidental….it's quick, I like that." She began making portraits of the cat who watched her work in the printmaking studio. In a few swift strokes, the cat's soft fur, twitching tail and attentive glance are defined. While an intimate look is implied, the cat remains lyrical and elusive-words that have also been used often to describe the artist herself.
