Norman Arthur Bate: A New York State printmaker, illustrator and painter, Norman Arthur Bate earned his bachelor's degree in illustration at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He then took his master's degree in printmaking and painting at the University of Illinois. Early in his career, Bate gained recognition as a fine illustrator, particularly in the field of children's books. His first book was published in 1953 and at least six others were printed during the following years. Three of his books were published in both England and the United States.
Norman Arthur Bate became the graphic arts instructor and Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957 and held that post until his retirement. During the following years he was very active in the field of original printmaking, most particularly creating prints in the mediums of aquatint and etching. These finely created prints and his other illustrated works won for him honors from institutions as the Joseph E. Pennell Award, the Library of Congress, Washington DC, the Paul J. Sachs Award, the Fogg Museum, Harvard University, the Dana Museum Award, the Boston Printmakers Annual Award and the Wichita Art Museum Award.
