Bamboo netting jacket

Bamboo netting jacket

19th century

Cut bamboo is a natural bead and is put to extensive use in this jacket. Tiny segments of bamboo are sewn in a mesh that is accented with blue glass beads. Bamboo's naturally slick surface is worn next to the skin, as an undergarment, to encourage coolness in the summer. The mesh allows air to circulate under an outer layer of clothing.
