Peter Young's interest in Native American art and his obviously handcrafted technique distinguished his work from the prevailing New York trend towards cool, geometric, and industrially fabricated art. Comprised of multiple individual brushmarks that evoke the "pointillism" of the neo-impressionists and aboriginal design as well, Young's dot paintings such as #27 were later described by the artist as "psychedelic painting"-a reference to the hallucinatory optical effects of these works, as well as the cultural movement of 1968, when they were made.
