The North American Indian, Vol. IX

1913

Edward S. Curtis

American, 1868-1952

When Curtis embarked on his 20-volume The North American Indian in 1906, Native lifeways had been curtailed but not abandoned. Forced assimilation, especially in boarding schools, did not entirely eradicate the use of canoes in fishing and travel to work in berry and hop fields, or the practice of religious and ceremonial activities.
