Label TextBellocq is known only for the large series of photographs which he left behind after his death. The pictures of prostitutes in a brothel-posthumously called "The Storyville Portraits" after the New Orleans red light district in which they were taken-are intimate and humane glimpses into another world. Like the work of Lyon or even Arbus, these photographs have a candid and privileged quality that is the result of the artist earning the trust of his sitters.
