A Chief's Daughter

A Chief's Daughter

1912

Edward S. Curtis

American, 1868-1952

Large cattail mats cover the walls and the baskets in the foreground reveal the unique style of Skokomish basketry designs. Is the young woman in the fur robe actually a chief's daughter? What is her name? These are questions that the photographer does not answer but he knowingly captures elements that reveal her standing: accomplished basketmaking skills and a royal cloak.
