Sue Ware vase

Date7th-8th century
Label TextWheel-thrown, high-fired, gray-colored wares like this are called Sue-ki, or "Sue vessels," in Japan, where they were made from around 400 to the middle of the classical Heian period (794–1185). In both form and surface decoration, this long-necked ceremonial jar draws upon earlier Korean examples. In fact, Korean potters are credited with creating the first pottery of this type in the Japanese archipelago. The jar features three bands of carved, wave-like patterns around its neck and a significant covering of glossy green ash glaze on the mouth and shoulders.
