The Tule Gatherer

1912

Edward S. Curtis

American, 1868-1952

In this print, Curtis demonstrates his affinities for naturalistic photography, the first fine art photographic style that was originated by Peter Henry Emerson in 1889. In this mode, landscapes were rendered in simple compositions that usually had a single point of interest. Curtis weds this approach with an ethnographic overlay by placing a lone woman in the frame.
