Not all Islamic art is religious. This rug, for example, is not a prayer rug, but instead once lay on the floor of a home or shop. Despite the secular, everyday identity of this floor covering, the floral motifs that fill the central ground evoke a garden, an enduring metaphor for Paradise in both secular and religious Islamic art.
