American, 1925 - 2008

Robert Rauschenberg studied with Joseph Albers at Black Mountain College in 1948-49, and in 1951 exhibited at the New York gallery of Betty Parsons, one of the staunchest supporters of Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman. An extraordinarily experimental and collaborative artist, his work in all mediums reflects a collage aesthetic, which often incorporates urban detritus and photography within the parameters of painting. The Cardbirds-a series of lithographs-are a punning play on this dimension of the artist's work.
