English Countryside with Canal Boat in Locks

English Countryside with Canal Boat in Locks

Peter De Wint

British, 1784-1849

In this painting, De Wint constructed a rustic scene honoring the steadfast farmer who has learned to adapt to natural and manmade calamities. The painter supplied many symbols of diverse changes in the lives of rural laborers: from toll keepers and the incursions of the new canal systems to the constant changes of Nature. De Wint's composition and golden sunset show the influence of earlier Dutch and Italian landscapes.
