One of the strongest characteristics of the Enlightenment was interest in the natural world. As explorers traveled to regions far from Europe they catalogued many previously unknown species of plants and animals; artists accompanied many expeditions to create a visual record of these discoveries. This print was published in 1801 in an important scholarly work, "La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle".
