My Blue Lake
1995
In the last decade, a time of plague, Smith has brought a fearless attention to the body and its processes: from inner organs and excretions to trailing hair and tender skin. This self-portrait shows the lyrical, transcendental yearnings that sustain her in these brave endeavors. She photographed herself with a camera that captures 360-degree views and found that the result reminded her of an aerial view of the lake. The addition of brown and blue created an image of primeval nature, with the artist as a concerned Mother Earth.
