Label TextKenney liked the relationship of the opposing areas of light and dark, calling it “opposition, provocation, deception.” Yet, much of the painting was the result of pure chance: "I sat and looked at it for days. All of a sudden, I knew I had to make a rapport between the top and bottom elements. I did it by means of that sword. The tension wouldn’t work unless the sword was painted exactly and pointed precisely at the center of the upper element." (Leo Kenney)
