Covered Bowl

Bow Porcelain Manufactory, London, England

The Bow Porcelain Manufactory of New Canton was the official early name of the English factory that produced this bowl. It heralds the factory's goal to compete with and even undercut Asian imports. The Japanese banded hedge pattern, a prunus tree, a "Chinese boy" playing with a string to which an enormous flower is attached, and a mythical lion (shishi) make up the pastiche of Asian-inspired motifs on this bowl and cover. This is a rare Bow pattern.
