This is from an important series of paintings Moskowitz made with found window shades, a material that was both recognizable and common, essentially the same as the canvas to which it is attached. The combination, along with the expressionist splatters and near monochrome of the painting, pushes it toward abstraction-yet the image of the shade continually reasserts itself back into one's perception.
