Label TextA sort of “accidental artist,” Paul Horiuchi did not begin painting professionally until the early 1950s, when he fell off a ladder and injured his arm, preventing him from doing heavy physical labor. He opened an antique shop and began painting in the back, and selling his works—mostly watercolors—up front. When he met with success, he turned to art full time. A friendship with Mark Tobey led Horiuchi to explore certain tenets of Japanese Buddhist philosophy and traditional Japanese art and to apply them to his own work. He turned to the technique of collage in the late 1950s, using torn bits of Japanese paper that he stained with casein and pigments.
