Sotoba no aru Highway

Date20th century
Maker Jun'ichiro Sekino Japanese, 1914 - 1988
Label TextSekino is known especially for his portraits of artists, from printers and actors to puppet masters, but his output was quite diverse in subject matter and prolific in quantity. Many of his best works resonate with emotional intensity. In this print, tall wooden grave markers called sotoba line the highway. The markers can be seen as elegies to Japan's quickly fading past, as modernity speeds by in a shiny red car.
