Nicholson was a leading member of the British avant-garde, developing a highly analytical and abstract approach to form. In this work, an ambiguous image is created that at times can appear figural, celestial, even vegetal. Such a loosening of the rules of interpretation were central to Modernist concerns and encourage the viewer to plumb their own imaginations for answers.
