Kakiemon octagonal bowl

Kakiemon octagonal bowl

early 18th century

Artfully placed motifs of plum, pine and bamboo decorate the exterior of this faceted bowl, while a pair of phoenixes chase one another around the center of the bowl's interior. Typical of Kakiemon-style Imari ware, much of the object's milky-white surface is left unembellished, in stark contrast to neighboring pair of Imari vases.
