Covered bowl with plum design

Date1660 - 70s
Label TextThis lidded bowl in the early Kakiemon style, which emerged in the Arita area of Kyushu in the mid-1600s, features blossoming plum trees, bamboo, and cloud motifs framed by bold red stripes. Executed in four colors—red, blue, green, and black—the playful design is informed by earlier Chinese Zhangzhou (also Swatow) ware, which was exported to Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe in large numbers in the late 1500s and early 1600s. Like the Chinese wares that inspired it, this bowl was produced in Japan for a foreign market.
