Echoes of the Temple Bell

1959

Paul Horiuchi

American, born Japan 1906 - 1999

This painting was made in Japan, while Horiuchi was staying in his hometown on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi at the foot of Mt. Fuji. During his stay, Horiuchi traveled to Kyoto and visited the famous Kiyomizu Temple, then later wrote: "This painting is symbolic of the temple bells in Japan. I was particularly impressed by the sound of the Kiyomizu Temple which I heard one evening on my recent visit to Japan, the sound slowly and heavily reverberating across the valley to the Hieizan Mountains of Kyoto." Dr. Fuller, founder and director of Seattle Art Museum, felt a similar affection for the great temple at Kiyomizu, and was inspired to select this painting for the collection.
