Self-Portrait in a Flat Cap and Embroidered Dress

Self-Portrait in a Flat Cap and Embroidered Dress

1642-1643

Rembrandt van Rijn

Dutch, 1606-1669

Lit sharply from the right, Rembrandt squints into the mirror as he scrutinizes his features. As in several other prints from the 1630s, Rembrandt wears a hat that casts a shadow over his features and lets him explore the play of light and shadow across his face.
