Bearing of the Cross

Bearing of the Cross

1512

Albrecht Dürer

German, Nuremberg 1471-1528

Surrounded by mourners and jeering soldiers, Christ is dragged toward Calvary carrying the cross on which he will be crucified. Kneeling at the lower left is Veronica, who will wipe Christ's face with her veil. The artist creates a menacing, noisy atmosphere with clashing angular forms and accents of light flashing in the darkness.
