Sudarium Displayed by Two Angels

This formal, symmetrical image elicits a devotional icon from a popular narrative. Two solemn angels display the sudarium, the cloth that Veronica used to wipe Christ's face as he carried the cross to the crucifixion. The cloth miraculously retained an imprint of his face-a divine instance of reproducing an image that must have been especially appealing to a printmaker.
