Landscape with a procession

early 19th century

Utagawa Hiroshige

Japanese, 1797-1858

In this fascinating triptych, women pilgrims in matching kimono and parasols are approaching the island Enoshima in groups to worship Benzaiten, the goddess of wealth, talent, and beauty. Mount Fuji, a landmark and major pilgrimage site in Japan about sixty miles west of Enoshima, stands in the background on the horizon.
