Deception Cove

Mason learned watercolor from Ray Hill, an older, established Northwest artist who Mason met as an undergraduate at the University of Washington. On a number of occasions, Hill invited Mason to paint with him at Deception Pass State Park, located west of where the artist was raised and a landscape Mason remains fond of to this day. It was a subject the artist painted in an earlier watercolor from 1951, titled Deception Pass. Travel, whether international or local, inspired Mason's work. Here, he offers an intimate view of a place he came to know well.
