Kurt Cobain

1994

Jack Pierson

American, born 1960

Pierson is well-known for his works with found marquee lettering, typically using these castoff but history-laden objects to communicate various states of melancholy, despair, and nostalgia. His choice of Cobain as his subject for this work speaks to the sense of loss that surrounds the late musician, the letters not only evoking movie theaters of yesteryear, but also the ransom-note typography of Kurt's beloved punk rock movement.
