John D. Graham
American, (born Ukraine), 1881-1961
Label TextGraham was a voracious student of the "new," devouring influences from Europe such as Cubism and Surrealism, and attempting to foment radical change among the artist community in New York, including Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, and David Smith. This work shows Graham processing the influence of Picasso and Matisse-in a manner similar to that of many American artists-just before the breakthrough of Abstract Expressionism.
