The Virgin on the Crescent

The Virgin on the Crescent

ca. 1500

Albrecht Dürer

German, Nuremberg 1471-1528

Most of Dürer's graphic work was created for devotional purposes; the small size and detailed manner contribute an appropriate sense of intimacy. This image of the Virgin and Child hovering on an upturned crescent moon is based on the vision of John the Evangelist described in the Book of Revelations 12:1 that would later be crystallized into the image of the Immaculate Conception, a potent doctrine for Catholics.
