Woman stretching (Femme s'etirant)

1896-1911

Edgar Degas

French, 1834-1917

Degas is celebrated for his elegant renderings of ballerinas both in two- and three-dimensional form, and was captivated by the female figure throughout his career. Works such as this, however, show that he also possessed a more crude side to his approach, where brute materiality and languid movement are kept in mesmerizing opposition.
