Warrior

Warrior

perhaps ca. 1200

Generous proportions lend a sensuous naturalism to Nayarit ceramics. This woman's rotund curves are modeled to balance well on her highly arched feet. Her thin arms emphasize the breadth of her ample shoulders. The warrior wears a long skirt suggestive of a quilted cotton garment, a conical hat, and complex-loop ear and nose ornaments. Both originate from the shaft chamber tombs found in the mountainous regions of West Mexico.
