Old Kyogen Fan; Cloud pattern

Old Kyogen Fan; Cloud pattern

ca. 1700

Folding fans are often used in Japanese theater performances as a prop. The fan’s design also needs to match—as do masks or costumes—the role that a character plays. This striking example was likely intended for a male character. The bold zigzag lines in the background represent lightning, while the multicolored clouds are auspicious symbols.
