Maillol, like Matisse, honed a dramatically simplified approach to the figure, whether in two-dimensions or three. In drawings like this, one can appreciate his preference for line to carry the burden of describing a female form, in opposition to more traditional approaches that would include extensive modeling and shading to achieve the likeness of a figure.
