The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds

The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds

1634

Rembrandt van Rijn

Dutch, 1606-1669

An angel materializes in the middle of the night bearing a divine message: the Savior is born. A burst of holy light pierces the velvety blackness, reavealing a rugged landscape where shepherds scramble to contain their stampeding flocks. This combination of atmosphere and theatricality maximizes the drama of the biblical tale.
