Christ Before Pilate
1636
This large composition reveals Rembrandt's pictorial ambition, but not his personal touch. In the 1630s, following the practice of other contemporary artists, Rembrandt worked with a printmaker to reproduce paintings for wider circulation. Van Vliet used Rembrandt's painted monochrome design as a model for the print, and Rembrandt made corrections before the final printing. For unknown reasons, the collaboration between the two men ended shortly afterward, and Rembrandt's further work with printmaking was much more personal.
