Self-Portrait with Raised Sabre

Self-Portrait with Raised Sabre

1634

Rembrandt van Rijn

Dutch, 1606-1669

Rembrandt depicted himself more than any other artist of his time. Here, grandly attired and brandishing a saber, he confronts the viewer with confidence, perhaps the result of his early professional success. It was also a milestone year for him personally, as he married a young woman named Saskia van Uylenburgh.
