Artists regularly portrayed themselves, but none did so as often or with as much verve as Rembrandt. In this double portrait, he looks up from sketching his wife Saskia, pen still in hand. Eschewing the fanciful costumes and expressions he often favored, Rembrandt presents himself simply as an artist at work. He would revist this theme decades later in the Kenwood painting.
