Old Man with a Divided Fur Cap

Old Man with a Divided Fur Cap

1640

Rembrandt van Rijn

Dutch, 1606-1669

As in many of Rembrandt's paintings, this half length figure is not a portrait but a study of an impressive man in a fascinating costume. Such figures would often reappear in his paintings of biblical or mythological subjects. Rembrandt clearly enjoyed exploring the different textures--the fine wiry hair and beard, the shimmering cloak, and the dense fur of the hat.
