The Golf-Player

The Golf-Player

1654

Rembrandt van Rijn

Dutch, 1606-1669

This sportsman enjoys a moment of repose at a cozy gathering spot after a rousing athletic endeavor. A mug of refreshment at his elbow, he sinks into a comfortable position and casually rests his leg on the bench. To the left a fellow player shows off his moves while two others converse in the background, adding to the conviviality in this slice of contemporary Dutch life, a rarity in Rembrandt's oeuvre.
