Albrecht Dürer
German, Nuremberg 1471-1528
Label TextAn exhaustively detailed cataloguing of animals and plants contains a miracle that is easy to miss-a Roman general hunting a stag suddenly noticed a crucifix between its antlers and converted to Christianity on the spot. This is Dürer's largest and most ambitious engraving, embodying a conscious attempt to rival painting in scope and tonal detail as he works against the inherent linearity of the medium.
